GESCHIEDENIS VAN HET PAND

Het statige hoekpand uit het midden van de 17e eeuw staat in het oudste deel van Amsterdam; enkele honderden jaren geleden arriveerden en vertrokken de internationale handelsschepen vanaf uw voordeur. Dit was het zenuwcentrum van de Nederlandse economie in die periode. Waar nu de auto's rijden, werden de boten bij laag tij op het droge getrokken. Een van de 3 panden die Michiel de Ruijter in Amsterdam bezat, is wat nu Prins Hendrikkade 156 heet.

GESCHIEDENIS VAN DE PRINS HENDRIKKADE

De kade vormde de noordelijke begrenzing van de stad Amsterdam en de zuidelijke oevers van het IJ. Het werd gevormd door een aantal oude namen met een lange geschiedenis, zoals de Haringpakkerij, de Texelsche Kade, Kampersteiger, de Oude Teertuinen, het Kamperhoofd, de Buitenkant en de IJgracht. Na de aanplemping van de Stationseilanden tussen 1870 en 1880 en de bouw van het CS grenst de Prins Hendrikkade aan het Open Havenfront en het Oosterdok. De kade werd in 1879 vernoemd naar Prins Hendrik (1820-1879), de jongste zoon van Koning Willem II en broer van Koning Willem III. De prins had veel belangstelling voor handel en zeevaart. Daarom werd hij dan ook vaak aangeduid als Hendrik de Zeevaarder. Zijn borstbeeld, dat sinds 1885 voor het Victoria Hotel stond, staat sinds 1979 voor het Scheepvaarthuis.

Bekende gebouwen aan de Prins Hendrikkade zijn onder andere het Victoria Hotel op de hoek van het Damrak, de Sint Nicolaasbasiliek aan de kop van de Zeedijk en het tot Grand Hotel Amrâth verbouwde Scheepvaarthuis bij de Binnenkant.
